Viridor Credits-Caradon Limited is an independent company,
limited by guarantee, which started in 2001 as the Roseland Environmental
Trust Limited. The change of name came when Pennon Group subsidiary
Viridor purchased the business in July 2002. It joined a national network
of charitable companies working with Viridor under the Viridor Credits
banner, and will continue to support community and environmental projects
within the local community using monies donated to it under the Government's
Landfill Tax Credit Scheme.
The Landfill Tax Regulations were revised from April 2003 and the
amount of "landfill tax credits" available under the scheme was reduced
but 2006 has seen both an increase in tax rates and after ten years a
new name – ‘The Landfill Communities Fund’ (LCF). Government
has also included a challenge with the additional funding to create new
youth volunteering opportunities within the LCF.
Landfill operators can claim a credit of 90% of the donation, the
remaining 10% being funded by private sector donations and having
a local body
ensures that donations are retained for the benefit of local residents
and their environment, with the added advantage of support from the
national Viridor group. Viridor opened its new Lean Quarry landfill
site in 2005
and the extra volumes processed meant more funds becoming available,
offering exciting possibilities for the future with the opportunity
to take on more ambitious projects. Primarily targeted to community
amenities
and buildings of religious and historical importance, Viridor Credits-Caradon
is now the most significant locally based funding body within Caradon
and has recently withdrawn its previous ceiling of £10,000 and
on a community value basis will now consider more ambitious projects.
The company operates throughout the Caradon District Council area
and includes all the main Caradon towns. The Board, which is comprised
of community and local government representatives, meets four times
a year
and invites local communities and organisations to apply for grants
towards projects that they may be considering. The level of grants
available
will bring significant benefits to the local community and enable
local
organisations to obtain matching funding from Europe, the National
Lottery and other bodies.
